Hard or soft mattress: What do I need for better sleep?
A good mattress is the foundation for a good night's sleep! So choosing the right mattress for you is a big decision.
One of the common concerns when buying a mattress is choosing between a firm, hard mattress or a fluffy, soft mattress. There are pros and cons to each, however, ultimately the choice is highly personal.
What is the difference between hard and soft mattress?
The obvious difference of course is the feel. A hard layer is stiffer to the touch. A softer layer will compress more easily when pressure is applied. The firmness or softness of a mattress depends on either the tension of the spring or the general tension of the construction within the mattress.
Advantages of a hard mattress
For those who do not experience nagging back pain, a firm mattress will generally be more comfortable. When you sleep on a firmer surface, the bones absorb most of the pressure, meaning there is less pressure on the muscles, veins and arteries. Muscles are strained less and circulation improves. A firm mattress also prevents your lower back from sinking, so body weight is distributed evenly. Firm mattresses are generally better for back and front sleepers because they provide a more firm and even surface.
Disadvantages of a hard mattress
On the surface, changing from a softer to a harder mattress may feel uncomfortable at first. This usually becomes less noticeable over time. For those with specific back problems such as arthritis and scoliosis, a firmer mattress can actually make the pain worse.
Advantages of a soft mattress
A softer mattress is usually recommended for those with pre-existing back problems. They are also recommended for lighter people. Softer mattresses are generally better for side sleepers as they better cushion the shoulders and hips. On the side, a softer mattress also better aligns the spine.
Disadvantages of a soft mattress
Although they may seem more comfortable and luxurious, a soft mattress can actually cause back problems for those who sleep on their backs or face, as well as those who are overweight.
Soft mattresses can also be uncomfortable for those who share a bed with their partner. The heavier partner may sink further, making the sleeping surface uneven. Finding a firm that suits both parties can be difficult.
How to choose the right one for you
So the three main factors to consider are whether you suffer from back pain in general, what sleeping position you prefer and what your weight is.
Another important factor that should not be overlooked is personal preference. Regardless of which one is more specialized for your spinal needs, if the mattress in your test seems uncomfortable, it will be difficult to get a good night's sleep. And that is the main purpose of a layer.
Finally, we must mention that the hardness level of a mattress is variable. There are the very hard ones, the very soft ones and those that are medium hard and may suit you better. Therefore, you can also move to options that are in between and just tend to one side or the other. Complement your choice with the right topper and complete the feeling you want to enjoy every time you lie down on your mattress!
