Latex mattresses: What they are and the advantages they offer

a latex mattresses are increasingly popular for their exceptional comfort and durability. They are also associated with environmentally friendly practices and enhanced sleep health. However, not all mattresses are the same! So how do you choose the best latex mattress for you or know if a latex mattress is right for you?

What is a latex mattress?

A latex mattress is made from two to four layers of latex foam and there are three different types: synthetic, blended and natural. Synthetic latex mattresses are primarily made from plastic that mimics rubber (SBR). SBR is also used in artificial turf, tires and conveyor belts. Latex mattresses with SBR are a safe and affordable alternative to natural latex, but not as durable. Another disadvantage is that synthetic latex contains chemicals that release gases that irritate people with respiratory problems. Mixed latex mattresses contain fewer toxic chemicals. These types of beds are 30% natural latex and 70%2 synthetic latex. Blended mattresses last longer than synthetic latex, but not as long as natural latex. Natural latex is more supportive, durable, environmentally friendly and better for sleep health. It is collected and refined from the sap of a rubber tree called Hevea Brasiliensis. This process encourages the healthy growth of rubber trees as they can be used for up to 30 years. Once the juice is harvested, it is processed into Dunlop or Talalay foam. Both are soft, supportive and extremely durable.

Five advantages of a natural latex mattress

1. It relieves pain The soft, cushioning and supportive support of latex foam mattresses is especially beneficial for sleepers with back and joint pain. The latex foam gently hugs the heavy parts of the body, such as the hips and shoulders. This lightweight contour provides pressure relief near the joints and lower back, while the natural elasticity of latex maintains the natural alignment of the spine by gently supporting lighter areas such as the neck and back. 2. Hypoallergenicity If a bed is not cleaned regularly, microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses can easily collect on the top of the mattress and cause mold. This results in allergies in the bedroom and an unsafe sleep environment. However, latex is naturally antimicrobial, meaning it repels harmful microorganisms, making latex a great choice for people with year-round allergies. 3. Environmentally friendly As mentioned above, natural latex is refined from rubber sap. The trees are not cut or damaged during this process and can produce sap for up to 30 years. Therefore, the latex layer treatment encourages tree growth and is highly sustainable. Natural latex is also biodegradable, ensuring it won't sit in a landfill for years. Although latex harvesting is a sustainable process, latex mattresses are not always responsibly manufactured. Some manufacturers use chemicals harmful to our health and the environment. GREENGUARD Gold, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, eco-INSTITUT or GOLS certification guarantees that the mattress is mainly made of natural materials and is safe to use. Latex mattresses may also contain other natural materials that can help a person with synthetic sensitivities get a good night's sleep. 4. "Breathes" Natural latex foam has an open cell structure to allow constant air flow. Most importantly, the chemicals found in synthetic materials retain body heat, and natural latex mattresses contain little to no additives. If you want a particularly cool layer, choose a breathable cover made of cotton or wool. 5. Durability Natural latex mattresses are best known for their long-lasting comfort. Premium latex mattresses have an average lifespan of 12 to 20 years — significantly longer than other types of mattresses. The durability of natural rubber is often credited for this longevity. A natural latex mattress bounces back effortlessly once pressure is removed, retaining its original shape for years of use.
