World Spine Day: Protect the spine and sleep well
World Spine Day on October 16 is a global reminder that we need to take care of our bodies through our daily habits. Habits that do not only concern the duration of wakefulness, but ALSO the hours of night sleep (needless to repeat that we spend 1/3 of our life in our sleeping mattress)!
Back pain is one of the leading causes of disability around the world and on October 16, thousands of people around the world are sharing the need for proper information and education about back and neck health.
Who here has never experienced some variation of back pain? From the crack your back makes when you do some heavy lifting to neck pain when you sleep the wrong way.
Short history lesson
World Spine Day was established in 2008 by the World Chiropractic Federation. For years, WFC has coordinated World Spine Day together with other concerned organizations around the world to raise awareness of back pain and other spine issues.
The numbers say…
About 1 billion people worldwide suffer from back pain, spinal pain and related disabilities in different age groups, genders and races. For context, there are approximately 7.6 billion people on Earth. Back pain is the single biggest cause of disability on the planet and one in four adults is estimated to suffer from low back pain in their lifetime. With such impressive statistics, it's no wonder World Spine Day is so necessary!
