Bed: How to choose the right mattress according to the base of your bed

We've talked several times about how important a mattress is to ensuring that we and those we love get restful nights and energized days.
That is why it is very likely that you have invested enough time and money to find the mattress with the right materials and the right construction that covers all the needs of your body. But what about your bed frame? How to choose the right mattress for your bed or even which bed frame fits the mattress you already bought. The bed frame is one of the most important factors that determine the lifespan of your mattress. That's why, although we know that a quality mattress can keep its properties intact for up to ten years, an inappropriate bed frame can render it useless in a much shorter period of time or even never allow it to offer you all its benefits during sleep. In particular, if the frame is too small, it can bend the mattress down or create an uneven surface with small mountains, as it squeezes and tries to fit into the narrow confines of the bed. Conversely if the bed is comparatively larger, then the mattress can lean to one side or sink without the necessary tight boundaries to hold it back. Either way your mattress will be uncomfortable and will break down much faster. To prevent such accidents, see the tips below.

The mattress must fit the dimensions of the bed

It is important to know the exact dimensions of your bed before choosing your new mattress. This is because frames differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Sometimes, in fact, even the construction material plays a role in the gaps it will leave for the reception of the mattress. For example, a metal bed is likely to have a thinner frame than a heavy solid wood antique of the same dimensions, thus leaving more space in between for the mattress. To confirm that your new mattress will fit your bed, measure the frame from the inside and calculate that the mattress should be about 2.5cm shorter than the length and width of our bed. This way you leave the necessary space for easy placement of it and your sheets. At Orion Strom you can customize the dimensions of your mattress before buying it, so that it fits like a glove on your bed frame!

Pay attention to the base of your bed

Different bed bases require a different mattress , mainly in terms of hardness and support mechanism. It is important to know that there are bed frames that are decorative and others that are more functional, meaning they can support a wider range of mattresses. In the first case, you may need an additional removable base for your mattress or make some improvements to it depending on your needs and budget. The bases on the market can be frames, platforms, with elastic metal strips or with wooden boards. Generally speaking, the most reliable support is offered by wooden boards, while at the same time they are an advantageous investment due to their great resistance to weight and time. However, you should make sure to get enough and check the distance between them from time to time, so that your mattress does not sink in the space they leave between them. Mattress-to-mattress beds, also known as divans, are an equally reliable option, as they act as hard platforms to place your mattress on. In addition, this type of bed can also fit smaller mattresses if you are not particularly concerned about the aesthetic effect.

Assess the height of the bed frame

The design of your bed affects its height and shapes your needs for a high or low mattress. Although the choice of mattress should be made primarily based on your personal needs and the support it offers, you do not want your soft mattress to sink into your bed frame and risk injury to its wood or metal during of sleep. Orthopedic mattresses are usually thinner due to their construction, so they are better suited to beds with a discreet frame or mattress-to-bed, i.e. beds that consist only of a base-platform and do not have a headboard or other frame. Depending on the height of your bed frame and base, calculate that your mattress should be able to stand up to 10cm above the bed frame under body pressure. At Orion Strom our mattresses range from 19 to 31cm, giving you a wide range of options in sizes, construction materials and different degrees of support.

Is it time to change the bed?

According to everything we have said so far, it becomes clear that when buying a new mattress, it is important to take into account the frame of our bed. So if your bed shows blemishes and signs of wear, such as cracks, dents and crooked screws, it might be time to change it. This way you will protect your mattress and your sleep. Ask yourself if your bed has seen much better days and act accordingly. Your investment for daily rest and rejuvenating sleep will not go to waste!
