Should mattresses be placed directly on the floor?

Placing the mattress on the floor may sound a bit strange to some people, however this alternative way of using it is gaining more and more fans. Some prefer it for economic reasons, or to save space. It's worth noting, however, that the floor is flat and stable, making it a good support system for your mattress. Some people with back pain may even prefer their mattress to the floor because the flat, even surface prevents the spine from sinking or slouching too much. But what, on a broader level, are the positives and negatives of placing the mattress on the floor? ADVANTAGES
  • (It can) reduce back pain
Sleeping on the floor can help your spine and neck stay in proper alignment. In these cases, it is best to sleep on your back for more comfort and relief from back pain.
  • Improves blood circulation
Your mattress is firmer when you're on the floor, and sleeping on a firm mattress, by extension, helps distribute your body weight evenly. This way, there is less pressure on any particular part of the body, thus allowing your muscles and tissues to receive better circulation during the night.
  • Economical solution
When you sleep on the floor, you don't need to buy a bed frame, which can be quite costly. Instead, you can prioritize your budget for a quality mattress .
  • Space saving
Often, bed frames are larger than the actual mattress size and take up a lot of space. If you have a small room, then the solution of the mattress on the ground seems ideal. DISADVANTAGES
  • Vulnerable to dust and mites
Dust mainly collects on the ground (especially if your floor is not swept regularly), it is big. Bed bugs and dust mites are attracted to moisture and heat, and because your mattress is on the floor, they now have easy access to your bed and linens.
  • Possible mold growth
On the floor, the ventilation of your mattress is limited and leads to hot sleep and sweating during the night. Moisture build-up from oils and sweat trapped in your mattress without proper airflow can cause mold growth.
  • Difficulty getting out of bed
If you have mobility issues such as arthritis or chronic musculoskeletal pain, using a bed this low to the floor can be difficult on a daily basis.
  • It may void your manufacturer's warranty
Most types of mattresses are made to fit on a bed frame, not the ground, as dust, bugs and mold can void all warranties.

Tips for maintaining the mattress on the floor

If you want to use your mattress on the ground regularly, we recommend regular maintenance to protect it from potential wear and tear. Taking extra precautions can extend the life of your mattress.
  • Air your mattress regularly
Once a week or so ventilate your mattress well and regularly turn it inside out, preventing mold growth.
  • Keep the floor under your mattress clean
To prevent dirt build-up, wipe and disinfect the area under and around your mattress. Always make sure the floor is completely dry before placing your mattress. A damp or even slightly damp surface puts your mattress at risk of mold growth.
  • Avoid Foam Mattresses
When you sleep on the ground, the material of your mattress affects the comfort and quality of your sleep. Foam mattresses, in particular, should not be used on the floor.
  • Check your mattress warranty
Make sure you read your mattress warranty before making the decision to sleep on the floor.
  • Place your mattress on specific surfaces
It is best to place your mattress on surfaces such as hardwood floors, tiles or synthetic carpets. Avoid natural fiber rugs and rugs made of wool or cotton, as they can lead to mold build-up, possibly causing allergic reactions.
  • Place a barrier between your mattress and the floor
Use a barrier, such as a piece of cardboard, a blanket, or a foam pad, between the mattress and the ground. This helps maintain the quality of your mattress and protects it from premature wear. A barrier also keeps your mattress clean, making it easier to maintain and improving its insulating properties.
  • Use a mattress protector
Always use a mattress protector, whether it's on a bed frame or not, as it will save your mattress from the build-up of sweat, dirt, stains and any harmful bacteria. *Article originally written for TerryCralle , official sleep information portal of Terry Cralle, Certified Nurse Practitioner & Sleep Clinician
