Mattress height: What factors affect the height I should choose
There's nothing better than sinking into a big, luxurious mattress paired with a soft pillow and a soft cover. But does the height of the mattress matter in the final feeling it offers me?
Why mattress height matters
Comfort, support and feel are the usual factors when buying a mattress. However, we tend to ignore one of the most defining aspects of the mattress - its height. Depending on the height, each mattress is designed to suit your particular needs.
Factors affecting layer thickness
There are specific factors to consider when looking for the ideal height for your new mattress:
1) Your body size
Sleep requirements and preferences differ from person to person primarily due to different body structures. The physiology of the body and the weight of each person directly determine whether a thin or medium layer is sufficient or whether a certain height and above is required. A more general feeling is that a body weight of more than 100 kg requires a mattress with a height of at least 30 cm for greater comfort.
2) Sleeping positions
Different sleeping positions require different mattress thicknesses, as they yield different properties:
- Back : They need a firm mattress with a height of 15-20 cm for a comfortable sleep every night.
- Sides : A soft mattress 20-25cm thick would be an ideal choice as it will allow the shoulders and hips to sink without feeling stuck.
- Face : A thick, firm mattress based on HD foam is highly recommended as it prevents compression and helps maintain spinal alignment.
